Small businesses or startups having annual turnover below Rs.12 lakhs can apply for a Basic Food License or FSSAI Registration. The Food Standards and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) issue it with a validity of one to five years. It has to be renewed within 30 days before the expiry date of the original license.
As operation increases and turnover reaches the bar of Rs. 12 lakh, the basic license has to be upgraded to a state license.
An FSSAI Registration Certificate consists of an ingrained QR code and the image of food business operator (FBO) with a 14-digit Registration number starting with 2 (2xxxxxxxxxxxxx), that has to be displayed at the shop/holding/premises at all times.
